Depending on the agency and the scope, a professional online shop in Germany costs roughly €5,000 to €100,000. The range is wide because every project has different requirements and goals. In this article we use two examples to show how the costs are made up: a platform switch from Magento or Shopware 5, and a lean basic shop.
Transparency matters to us. Our customers know what they are paying for and what they get in return. The examples also show how we make the move to a new platform as smooth as possible.
Case study: switching from Magento or Shopware 5
Let’s take a shop operator who currently works with an older Magento or Shopware 5 system and has to move to a new system for technical reasons. This brings requirements that go beyond the migration itself. Besides the data, knowledge has to be transferred too: all existing functions and processes should be retained, and the weak points of the old system are improved in a targeted way. A platform switch is therefore also an opportunity to develop the shop further.
How do we go about it?
First we hold a detailed initial meeting to understand the customer’s needs and estimate the standard effort. These points may play a role:
- Project management: an experienced project manager coordinates the requirements and makes sure everything goes to plan.
- Data flow analysis: we review all processes between the old shop system and ERP or PIM systems (enterprise resource planning and product information management), as well as feeds for price comparison sites and marketplace connections.
- Communication channels: we clarify which email services, newsletters and messenger integrations (e.g. WhatsApp) are needed.
- Mock-up and requirements analysis: together we create a mock-up and analyse the technical requirements in order to define the basic structure of the new shop.
- Data migration and ERP integration: the data has to be transferred cleanly and the ERP system connected so that the new shop works.
- Template design and development: based on the mock-up, we design and develop templates tailored to the customer’s requirements.
- Content population and system integrations: in a test environment, the content is entered and additional systems are connected.
- Development of custom functions: if the shop needs special functions, we develop them as a plugin or script.
- Regular meetings: review meetings, briefings and weekly updates keep the project on track.
The tasks can quickly become complex and extensive. In this example, the project volume easily ends up between €30,000 and €60,000. How we plan such moves is described in detail on our page about migration and relaunch with Shopware.
Another example: a basic shop with design and implementation
If a customer only needs a design and a turnkey implementation, the costs are on a completely different scale. Here the focus is on design and clean implementation; complex data migration or deep process integration is not required. A project like this is more likely to be in the range of €5,000 to €7,000.
Conclusion: clarify processes and requirements to find the right budget
Before the project starts, think carefully about which processes and workflows the agency should support, take over or accompany. From experience we know how important it is to tailor the budget to the customer’s requirements. With us you get a clear overview of the costs, from the platform switch to the further development of your online shop.
