Why filters and variants without an SEO concept use up crawl budget

Every filter, every sort order and every variant can create its own URL. In large catalogues this produces tens of thousands of almost identical pages. Google spends its time on them, while new products and important categories reach the index late or not at all.

What filter and variant SEO does for you

  • Google crawls categories and products instead of endless filter combinations.
  • Filter pages in demand, such as brand plus category, are turned into landing pages.
  • Variants consolidate their signals on one strong URL.
  • New products appear in search results sooner.

Scope of services

What our filter and variant SEO covers

  • Inventory

Which filter and parameter URLs are created and which ones Google already crawls.

    • Crawl
    • Log files
  • Indexing rules

noindex, canonicals and robots.txt combined so that nothing important is lost.

    • noindex
    • Canonical
  • Filter landing pages

Filter combinations with real search demand get a title, copy and a permanent place.

    • Search volume
    • Categories
  • Variants

For each product range we decide whether variants share one URL or get their own.

    • Colour
    • Size

Filters, sort orders and variants make a shop easy to use, but they often create thousands of almost identical URLs. We control them so that Google spends its crawl budget on the pages that sell.

Structure comes before design: which content goes where, and where should the visitor click next?

Shopware, WooCommerce and other systems

Every shop system creates filter URLs differently. That is why we implement the rules directly in the system and check the result in Search Console. For Shopware, the page on Shopware SEO describes the specifics, and the fundamentals are covered under technical SEO.

How we work

How we approach filter and variant SEO

  1. Understand

We look at your business, your systems and your figures before we suggest anything.

  2. Plan

You receive a concept and a quote with individual items and a realistic schedule.

  3. Build

We develop in stages. You see interim results on a test environment and approve them.

  4. Run

After go-live we take care of hosting, updates and monitoring if you want us to.

Frequently asked questions about filter and variant SEO

All questions and answers
Should filter pages always be set to noindex?

No. Most filter combinations do not belong in the index, but some have real search demand, such as brand plus category. We turn these into dedicated landing pages and exclude the rest.

Do variants need their own URLs?

That depends on the product range. If people search specifically for a colour or size, a separate URL can make sense. Otherwise we consolidate the signals on one main URL.
