Why Shopware databases slow down on default settings

Many Shopware databases run on default values intended for a small test shop. Meanwhile, tables for logs, baskets or message queue messages keep growing quietly. At some point the memory is no longer sufficient, and every query gets slower, even the well-built ones.

What better database performance in Shopware 6 does for you

  • The database makes sensible use of the available memory.
  • Large log and helper tables are cleaned up regularly.
  • Message queue and scheduled tasks run reliably in the background.
  • You see bottlenecks before they slow the shop down.

Scope of services

What our Shopware database performance work covers

  • Configuration

    Buffer pool, log files and connections to match shop and server.

  • Memory

    Memory is allocated so that frequently used data stays in memory.

  • Table clean-up

    Logs, old baskets and helper tables no longer grow without limit.

  • Message queue

    Workers and messages run reliably without flooding the database.

  • Scheduled tasks

    Scheduled tasks run reliably and at the right time.

  • Monitoring

    Load, memory and slow phases in view, also with ShopSignal.

When optimising database performance, we configure MySQL or MariaDB to suit your Shopware 6 shop. We allocate memory sensibly, clean up growing tables and make sure the message queue and scheduled tasks run reliably. This keeps the database fast as your catalogue and visitor numbers grow.

Tech stack

  1. ApplicationShopware, Laravel or WordPress with theme and plugins
  2. Cache and searchRedis and Elasticsearch configured to fit
  3. PHPcurrent version with OPcache
  4. Serverour own servers with NVMe storage
We look at every layer, not just the theme: from the application through cache and search to the server.

Background processes under control

Shopware does a lot in the background: indexing, emails, clean-up, imports. All of this runs via the message queue and scheduled tasks. If the workers do not run continuously or messages pile up, the load on the database rises exactly when customers are shopping. We set up the background processes so that they work reliably and evenly.

public static function getSubscribedEvents(): array
{
    return [
        ProductPageLoadedEvent::class => 'onProductPage',
    ];
}

public function onProductPage(ProductPageLoadedEvent $event): void
{ /* add data without touching the core */ }
We build extensions as separate Shopware plugins so the shop stays update-safe.

Server and queries go hand in hand

A well-configured database cannot rescue a poorly built query. That is why we check both: the configuration here and individual queries as part of database query optimisation. If the server itself reaches its limits, take a look at our Shopware hosting.

How we work

How we improve your Shopware database performance

  1. Understand

    We look at your business, your systems and your figures before we suggest anything.

  2. Plan

    You receive a concept and a quote with individual items and a realistic schedule.

  3. Build

    We develop in stages. You see interim results on a test environment and approve them.

  4. Run

    After go-live we take care of hosting, updates and monitoring if you want us to.

Frequently asked questions about Shopware database performance

All questions and answers
Are the MySQL default values enough for Shopware?

For small shops they often are. As the catalogue and visitor numbers grow, the defaults are usually too tight, especially the memory for frequently used data. We adjust them to your server and your load.

Which tables grow particularly fast in Shopware?

Typically log tables, saved baskets and helper tables, and depending on the extensions also plugins' own tables. We check what is growing in your shop and set up regular clean-up.

Can you implement this with our hosting provider?

That depends on the access available. On managed servers we coordinate the settings with your hosting provider. On our Shopware hosting we apply them directly.

Related services
  • Performance

    Faster Shopware 6 shops: we measure with ShopSignal and Tideways, find the bottlenecks in database, cache, search, theme and server, and fix what makes the biggest difference first.

  • Redis

    We set up Redis for Shopware 6: for cache, sessions, locks and counters, cleanly separated and configured to stay stable under load.

  • Elasticsearch

    We connect Elasticsearch or OpenSearch to Shopware 6 so that search, filters and listings come from a dedicated index and the database is relieved.

  • Database queries

    We find the queries that slow down your Shopware shop, understand them with EXPLAIN and profiling, and fix them with indexes, better DAL queries or adjusted plugin code.
