Shopware database query optimisation: find and fix slow queries
We find the queries that slow down your Shopware shop, understand them with EXPLAIN and profiling, and fix them with indexes, better DAL queries or adjusted plugin code.

Why Shopware slows down without query optimisation
A single poorly built query can slow a category page down by seconds. Common causes are missing indexes, plugins that load the same data over and over in a loop, or DAL queries that load more associations than necessary. From the outside, all you see is that the page hangs.
What Shopware query optimisation does for you
- You know which query costs how much time.
- Missing indexes and unnecessary joins are fixed in a targeted way.
- Plugins only load the data they really need.
- Every change is backed by a measurement.
Scope of services
What we take on for your Shopware query optimisation
- Slow query log
Collect the slowest queries in live operation and sort them by impact.
- EXPLAIN analysis
Understand why a query is slow: table scans, joins, sorting.
- Indexes
Add missing indexes, remove redundant ones.
- DAL & associations
Build criteria so that Shopware only loads what the page needs.
- Plugin code
Bundle queries inside loops and cache the results.
- Profiling
Use Tideways to see which query is stuck in which request.
With database query optimisation, we find the queries that slow down your Shopware 6 shop and fix them specifically. We evaluate the slow query log, analyse queries with EXPLAIN and use profiling to see which request triggers which query. The solution often lies in a missing index, an overly broad DAL query or a plugin that loads data in a loop.
Tech stack
- ApplicationShopware, Laravel or WordPress with theme and plugins
- Cache and searchRedis and Elasticsearch configured to fit
- PHPcurrent version with OPcache
- Serverour own servers with NVMe storage
From symptom to cause
‘The category page is slow’ is a symptom. Profiling turns it into a concrete query: for example a variant list that is reloaded separately for every product, or a filter that scans a large table in full. Only once we know the cause do we decide whether an index, a changed criteria object or a rework of the plugin is the right answer.
public static function getSubscribedEvents(): array
{
return [
ProductPageLoadedEvent::class => 'onProductPage',
];
}
public function onProductPage(ProductPageLoadedEvent $event): void
{ /* add data without touching the core */ } Looking at code and server separately
Some queries are well built and still slow because the database server is configured too tightly. We deal with that in database performance optimisation. Search and listings can also be taken out of the database entirely with Elasticsearch or OpenSearch.

Frequently asked questions about Shopware query optimisation
All questions and answersHow do you find the slow queries?
Via the database's slow query log and by profiling individual requests, for example with Tideways. This shows us which query costs the time on which page.
Do you change Shopware itself to do this?
No. We do not change the Shopware core. We optimise indexes, custom extensions, plugins and the way data is loaded, so updates remain possible.
How is this different from database performance optimisation?
This is about individual queries and the code behind them. With database performance, we tune the database server itself, for example memory, buffers and clean-up tasks.
- Performance
Faster Shopware 6 shops: we measure with ShopSignal and Tideways, find the bottlenecks in database, cache, search, theme and server, and fix what makes the biggest difference first.
- Redis
We set up Redis for Shopware 6: for cache, sessions, locks and counters, cleanly separated and configured to stay stable under load.
- Elasticsearch
We connect Elasticsearch or OpenSearch to Shopware 6 so that search, filters and listings come from a dedicated index and the database is relieved.
- Database performance
We configure MySQL or MariaDB to suit your Shopware shop, clean up growing tables and make sure background processes do not slow the database down.
